Pugzie's opened for business on Sept. 23, 1981, serving sandwiches, soup, salads and snacks. With the help of their parents, sisters Lynn Pugliano and Lisa Pugliano-Wright converted a service station owned by their father into the original sandwich shop. The shop was named "Pugzie's" as a shortened version of their last name. The toucan bird was selected as the logo of their tropical garden atmosphere. The sisters' goal was to provide fresh, healthy lunches with friendly, fast service. Word spread quickly about the scrumptious sandwiches, delicious soups, crisp salads and wonderful baked goods and Pugzie's Sandwich Shop became a mainstay for people working in the Central and Camelback corridors.
After 13 years of continued growth and 3 expansions on the original building, there was no room left to expand the sandwich shop. A 12,000 sq. ft. office complex adjacent to their property was purchased and 6,000 sq. ft. was remodeled into a new restaurant with inside seating for 282 people. They also added a drive-up window for phone and fax orders and a beautiful courtyard for outdoor eating. The original sandwich shop was torn down and converted to customer parking for the new restaurant. Although the building has changed, Lisa and Lynn's goal remains the same - providing fresh, healthy soups, salads, sandwiches and baked goods with friendly, fast service.
